When A Portion is Not a Portion (part 2)

I posted an article yesterday about some of the ludicrous products that pass the ‘1 of your 5’ fruit and veg test – Heinz Tomato Soup, Froot Loops and ready meals among others.

The takeaway is simple – don’t be taken in by the labels, especially when the labels themselves represent a flawed understanding of what our bodies actually need.

You see, the ‘5 a day’ was a convenience thing – it sounded good, and the idea was that five portions of fruit and vegetables was more attainable than the reality, which is 10-15 portions a day.

Sounds like a lot, right?  But actually, a portion is just 80g, which isn’t that much when you weigh it out.

But despite all the evidence suggesting that it’s MORE portions of proper fruit and veg that we need, the chair of the Royal College of GPs, says that five a day is “unrealistic” and it should be changed to 2 a day!

(By the way, she also rejects the idea that smokers should always be told to give up – this is the head of guidance for doctors in the UK!!!)

The NHS is in crisis and the head of doctors recommends 2 portions a day; you couldn’t make it up.

At the same time, some of the most respected medical research universities in the world are telling us that getting 10-15 portions a day will dramatically cut incidences of all the top killers (heart disease, diabetes, cancer) as well as dramatically improving our lives right away.

Anyway, what can you do?

 – Well, firstly forget the ‘five a day’ and forget the labels on packaging.

 – Buy whole fruits and veggies and weigh them as you are preparing your meals.

 – Remember each portion is just 80g, so you can get a good idea of the portions in each meal.

 – Aim for at least 10 per day!

You can get a huge boost of nutrition (over 5 portions of raw fresh veg in one drink) HERE.

If you are lacking in time, you can get an additional 5 portions of veg in each serving of Mega Greens here.

Have a great day!
